The DC-615 and DC-616/Pro Slitter/Cutter/Creasers have been reliable multi-finishing workhorses for print shops worldwide.
But digital print production has changed. Today’s print environments demand faster turnaround times, shorter runs, more automation, and greater flexibility than ever before. Making the switch to a newer generation in slit/cut/crease, like the DC-618, delivers all that – and more.
Even if your current machine is still running, you may notice it’s no longer operating as smoothly as it once did. Here are the signs it may be time to consider an upgrade.
1. You Need More Finishing Capabilities
Simply put, the DC-618 Slitter/Cutter/Creaser is faster in speed, provides easier job setup and operator training, and is more versatile. Features like removable slitters make clearing jams quicker by allowing operators to lift out the module directly.
But the DC-618 offers much more than that. This is what makes it different:
- Produces 24-up business cards on 13” x 19” paper and processes 192 cards a minute without an additional module required.
- Supports banner sheet sizes up to 39.3” in length and stocks up to 400 gsm, making it more compatible with modern digital presses.
- Runs up to 200% faster than the DC-616 Pro, even when using the barcode reader.
- Simplifies multiple-up job setup with the enhanced PC Controller. Operators only need to enter the first cut or slit position, and the system automatically handles the rest.
- Expands finishing possibilities with optional rotary tool and cross perforating modules for tear-off applications. The in-line knife folder means you can finish everything in a single pass without the need for a separate device.
These advantages impact your throughput, efficiency, and profitability – all without adding labor.
2. Your Finisher is Getting Harder to Maintain
At the heart of every Slitter/Cutter/Creaser is the drive system made up rollers, belts, motors, and sensors. These components keep everything moving, aligned, and consistent for processing digital print applications on demand.
But as equipment ages, maintaining the same level of accuracy and performance becomes challenging. Over time, normal wear and tear can lead to:
- Inconsistent cuts
- Feeding and skewing issues
- Increased adjustments to compensate for inconsistencies
- More downtime and expensive repairs
Most issues are commonly due to worn-out rollers, dull cutter blades, and old components that need to be replaced. The DC-615, for example, was Duplo’s first entry-level digital finisher and a true industry milestone. But with this model approaching 20 years in service, it has officially reached end-of-life. Certain parts are no longer available, and service options are limited.
3. You’re Setting Up Jobs Twice
Modern print workflows are all about automation and optimization, and finishing is no exception. The DC-618 Slitter/Cutter/Creaser can be fully integrated with Fiery Impose software, allowing operators to automate the imposition and finishing of common jobs, while eliminating much of the manual setup required with older systems.
With this bi-directional integration, users can create custom imposition layouts within Fiery Impose with cut, crease, and perforation settings that are recognized by the DC-618 to set itself up. It also applies necessary registration marks and barcodes (along with margins and gutters) that allow the finisher to adjust automatically. This reduces touchpoints, errors, and setup time by up to 70%.
You won’t need to set up a finishing layout on the PC Controller to import into Impose. Fiery Impose has built-in knowledge of the DC-618 configuration options and constraints. It knows how it works. This integration speeds up turnaround time with less human intervention.
If your system isn’t fully integrated with Impose, you’re doing more work than necessary.
For a limited time, you can trade in your DC-616/Pro, DC-615, or DC-645 and upgrade toward a new unit using exclusive credits. If you’re interested in upgrading to the DC-618 Slitter/Cutter/Creaser, check out the current offer here.
It’ll be one of the smartest investments you can make in your finishing.
